Valentine's Day Weddings
Sunday, February 14, 12 noon, Center Court
Food and love; love and food. They're a perfect pair! This Valentine’s Day several local couples continue the tradition of tying the knot at the Reading Terminal Market when Common Pleas Court Judge Jeffrey P. Minehart marries each of them, one at a time, in the Market’s Center Court. After the ceremonies, the couples will be treated to a complimentary dessert reception hosted by Reading Terminal Market merchants while the entire ensemble is serenaded by Violinist Elizabeth Cary.
Philly to New Orleans: Beck's Cajun Cafe Celebrates Mardi Gras Celebration
Fat Tuesday, February 16, 11am-2pm, Center Court
Mardi Gras is coming to Reading Terminal Market with Philadelphia with “Philly to New Orleans,” a free celebration in the Market’s Center Court. Hosted by Beck’s Cajun Café, the Market's brand new Cajun food stand, “Philly to New Orleans” evokes the joy and revelry of Mardi Gras with the music, spectacle and tastes of the Big Easy in Philadelphia’s historic public market.
The festivities begin at 11 a.m. with Dixieland music and a parade. Chef Beck will serve-up authentic New Orleans favorites including jambalaya, muffaletta and a giant pot of gumbo. Proceeds from the sale of the gumbo will benefit the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity to help the people of New Orleans displaced by Hurricane Katrina. At 1 p.m., there will be a cutting of the King Cake, a Mardi Gras tradition. A King Cake is cinnamon-filled dough twisted in the shape of a hollow circle. The cake is sprinkled with colored sugar of purple, green and gold, representing justice, faith and power. A porcelain or plastic “baby” is baked into the King Cake. Tradition holds that whoever finds the baby hosts the next party and is crowned king for the day.
The History of Neon in Philadelphia
Thursday, February 25, 6pm
Philadelphia Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street
Philadelphia has been a major manufacturer of creative neon signage since the 1930s, and during the middle of the 20th century, neon signs turned North America’s cities and roadways into a luminous wonderland. At this event, Len Davidson, curator of the Neon Museum of Philadelphia, will discuss the history of this electrifying folk art and Philadelphia’s efforts to preserve its neon treasures. Davidson has collected and/or preserved more than 200 vintage signs including the Reading Terminal Market, Pat’s Steaks, Levis Hotdog, and McGillin’s Old Ale House.
Cost: $5 for members of Phila SAH, Oliver Evans SIA, and Philadelphia AIA; $10 for all others. Participants can pay at the door either in cash or by check payable to Philadelphia Chapter SAH. If you have questions, call Len Davidson at 215-232-0478.

Old City Coffee:
Throughout the month of February, join Old City Coffee's commemoration of Black History Month with their African Coffee Festival. One featured product is Rwanda PEARL Project coffee, grown by farmers organized and trained by Michigan State University's Institute for International Agriculture. This project aims to increase the quality of Rwandan coffee, connect growers with markets, and provide livelihood for thousands of Rwandans who are involved in the production of coffee. The coffee is certified Fair Trade and is in the process of becoming certified Organic. Initial cupping puts this squarely in the category of "big punch" East African coffees: medium acidity, good body, winy notes, and a hit of licorice. This will be available February 17-23.
